Dear Cost Conscious,
I generally take 3 steps toward making sure my clients are at ease and confident that their funds will be maximized. The truth is their decision to hire and work with a planner/consultant already puts them 10 steps ahead of the game and the rest depends on proper research/education, realistic estimation and risk identification/management. My process usually includes the following:


1. Research/Education - After a couple has decided on a budget, it's very important to take it a step further and research exactly what wedding costs are in their area. Depending on what style or type event is to be planned each spending category can vary widely. For instance with food, a couple looking to hold a small gathering could find a lovely restaurant offering a family-style dinner with open bar and a wedding cake for $50 per person while a couple looking to host their guests at a historic estate with beautiful gardens and first-class service could expect a $250 per person price tag.

2. Realistic Estimation - One should never assume that it's impossible to host a large guest list without an equally large budget. There are many ways to keep costs down, but careful planning is crucial. I develop estimates of all wedding costs for my clients so there are clear benchmarks set to work toward. Managing priorities will be very important as well. For instance, if photography is an important aspect of the event, for preservation reasons, and the couple also insists that the food be an area of "splurge" then it will be important to know that up front to scale other services accordingly.  Working with a wedding planner will REALLY come in handly here, as they are equipped to offer clever and creative ideas for achieving grandeur on a smaller budget.

3. Risk Identification/Management - After a budget has been set, developing and maintaining it is key. I work together with my clients to scrupulously update and organize their budget.  It's imperative that the planner and client are always aware of what has been spent, what balances exist and what the areas of risk could be. During the last month/weeks before a wedding there are usually huge sums due to vendors and venues, so if a couple is not prepared this could cause lots of unnecessary stress. Proper management alleviates most surprises and surprise debt.

Fabulous advice Rashana! Wedding cost can spiral out of control really quickly and having a planner really helps to stem the flow. Plus planners know which other wedding vendors can best fit the needs of the couple and they really can make the wedding day flow easily. I love events where there is a planner helping to run the day, makes all the difference!

Aidan & Jonathan: Enchanted Forest

We shared snapshots of our Enchanted Forestwedding just four days ago and somehow, SOMEWAY, professional photos became available last night!  (an unbelievable world record ... calling Guinness after the holiday)

As mentioned before, we were brought on to plan and execute this wedding just 3 months out, at which time 90% of the vendors and service providers had not been selected.  But I must say, we couldn't have had a better team of professionals bring this event to life if we'd started a year ago.  

The ceremony was held in the evening on the outdoor patio of Stone House at Stirling Ridge in Warren, NJ.  On this brisk mid-November night, our teams successfully achieved a loving and warm ambiance by having clear tent wall covered by swags of 21-foot long fabric hung on the outer perimeter of the space.  This treatment allowed for the bride's dream of being married near nature but also kept the couple's beloved friends and family comfortable.  A blooming birch-branch …

Lola & Lekan: Golden Gala

We shared snapshots of our Golden Gala wedding last month, but now professional photos are in!

This season we've been extremely blessed with virtually perfect weather, and for this event it was no different.  A traditional Nigerian ceremony was held the day before, featuring a host of absolutely stunning elements of the bride and groom's African culture.  The traditional American ceremony, the next day, was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Englewood followed by a really fun-loving reception at The Royal Manor in Garfield.  Almost 500 of the couple's family and friends partied into the night, enjoying a gorgeous mix of Nigerian and American culture ... plus our romantically designed "Sweets Sideboard" that followed their white, ivory and gold color scheme was a huge hit!
